On This Day: April 27th

In 1667 on the 27th of April John Milton the author of Paradise Lost sold the copyright to Paradise Lost for only £10. Milton had been blind since 1652 and at this time he was also impoverished and needed the money. Ten pounds however is a small amount for such a work, its influences can still be seen in films, books and video games today, notably in movies like Se7en and The Devil’s Advocate. This was a low point in the life of John Milton who has gone on to be “as one of the preeminent writers in the English language” and in William Hayley’s 1976 biography he was regarded as the “greatest English author”.
