On This Day: May 9th

May 9th in 1662 was the first recorded appearance of Mr.Punch in England, the character is famous as one half of violent puppet show Punch and Judy. The show is performed by a single puppeteer inside the booth, known since Victorian times as a “professor” or “punchman”, and assisted sometimes by a “bottler” who corrals the audience outside the booth, introduces the performance, and collects the money. Punch and Judy both, but generally more so the character of Punch have become a fixture in English popular culture. This includes appearances in tv shows such as Doctor Who and Midsomer Murders. The character is still popular today with shows still being performed for a mainly child audience.
