On This Day: May 12th

On the 12th of May in 1551 the oldest university in the Americas, the National University of San Marcos was founded in Lima, Peru. Today it is the most important and respected higher education institution and consistently ranks within the nation’s top two universities. The university was chartered by a royal decree signed by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, which makes it one of the oldest universities in the world. The university even has public institutions such as the Museum of Natural History of Lima under its government. San Marcos’ prestige in Latin America mainly arises from its renowned faculty and alumni. It is the only university in Peru with a Nobel Prize laureate among its alumni: Mario Vargas Llosa (Literature)
