On This Day: May 16th


On the 16th of May 1929 the first Academy Awards were awarded in Hollywood, California. The Academy Awards became an annual award show awarding those who have left their mark in Hollywood’s film industry, the most recent ceremony was the 88th Academy Awards.

The host of the first awards ceremony was Douglas Fairbanks, and the event was held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The ceremony was to honour the best films from both 1927 and 1928, 270 people attended the event and the presentation ceremony lasted only fifteen minutes.

The main award winners at the first Academy Awards were; Wings (Best Picture), Lewis Milestone (Best Director), Emil Jannings (Best Actor), Janet Gaynor (Best Actress) and honorary awards were given to Warner Brothers Production and Charlie Chaplin for their services to the film medium.
