On This Day: May 19th

On May 19th 1991 Croatia voted to become independent from Yugoslavia. The independence was declared on 25th of June 1991. Throughout this year Croatia was at war with Serbia over Croatian independence. Serbia had wanted to create a Serbian controlled Yugoslav state, this would include parts of Croatia and Bosnia. Bosnia’s independence was also at stake later in the Croatian War of Independence, this was a brutal and bloody saga in the history of the former Yugoslavian states. Croatia remained whole and independent at the conclusion of the war, free from Serbian oppression.
