On This Day: May 24th


On the 24th of May in 1830 the children’s nursery rhyme ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’, authored by Sarah Hale, was published. It is a nineteenth century English language rhyme of American origin, it was published in Boston by publishing firm Marsh. The rhyme was part of Hale’s collection Poems for our Children, which includes ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ (originally titled ‘Mary’s Lamb’). It was also later adapted into song by Lowell Mason, and was the first thing recorded by Thomas Edison on his phonograph in 1877.
