On This Day: June 8th


In 798 on the 8th of June Vikings raided the abbey at Lindisfarne in Northumbria. This was generally seen as the start of Norse activity in the British Isles. There were a number of periods with invasions such as 865-896 which included the capture of York in 866 the death of King Æthelred of Wessex and the introduction of Danelaw, the second invasion period was 980-1012 and the later more famous invasion in 1066.
