On This Day: June 18th

On June 18th 1858 Charles Darwin received a paper from Alfred Russel Wallace with near identical conclusions about evolution, this prompted Darwin to have his theory published. He published a joint publication with Wallace introducing the theory of evolution from common ancestors and concluded that the branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Darwin later published his theory of evolution evidence in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of species.
