On This Day: June 19th


On June 19th 1910 the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington. father’s day is the now annual celebration which honours fathers, celebrates fatherhood, paternal bonds and the influences of fathers in society. In Catholic Europe, it has been celebrated on 19th of March as part of St.Joseph’s Day since the Middle Ages. This celebration was brought by the Spanish and Portuguese to Latin America, where 19th March is often still used for it, though many countries in Europe and the Americas have adopted the US date which is the third Sunday of June which happens to be 19th of June 2016, 106 years after the first Father’s Day.
